Toms River Township Board of Fire Commissioners Fire District # 2 has a Junior Firefighter Program starting in early 2022!

This program offers teenagers ages 14-18 the opportunity to participate in the fire company in many different aspects.   This program is sponsored by Fire District # 2 and as a Junior Firefighter you will be part of Silverton Fire Company Station 29 or Pleasant Plains Fire Department Station 30.  Junior Firefighters will respond to fire and other emergency calls, attend training, participate in fire company events and meetings.  Many of our firefighters and officers started out in the fire service as fire explorer’s years ago.

As a Junior Firefighter, you will have the opportunity to attend Firefighter 1, at no cost to you, immediately upon your 18th birthday, offered through the Toms River Township Fire Training Center located in our town on Church Road. The training center has state of the art training facilities and some of the most experienced and knowledgeable instructors around.

Prior to beginning Firefighter 1, junior firefighters at Station 29 will participate in monthly training with the rest of the fire company, monthly meetings, work sessions, and fundraising events. As a company we train in structure fires, vehicle fires, foam use, HAZMAT, patient packaging with use of a rescue basket, brush fires, radio communication, emergency scene size-up, use of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), and vehicular extrication. As a result of the planned training our Junior Firefighters will be part of, the vast majority enter Firefighter 1 with confidence and are able to pass the course with high marks. As a Junior Firefighter, you are not expected or required in any way to be perfect. You are however, expected to ask questions and learn as much as you can from our firefighters that make up our roster.

The time commitment for a junior firefighter is not less than our volunteer firefighters. However, we fully understand and encourage that our junior firefighters' most important responsibility is to honor family commitments, and fulfill all of their academic requirements. As a Junior Firefighter, you will NEVER be required to miss school or any academic event. Much in the same way our members both fire fighters and Fire Police are not required to miss work or neglect their family obligations.

If you are interested in joining the Silverton Volunteer Fire Company # 1 as a junior firefighter, or would like more information, we would love the opportunity to meet you and discuss any questions or concerns you or your parent or guardian may have. The Junior Firefighter Committee will guide you through the application process and make sure you have everything you need to succeed in the program.
